Hillhead Club Campsite, Devon: Our Full Family Review
There are Club sites, and then there are Club sites that stay with you. Hillhead, on the south Devon coast, is firmly in the second category. We have visited as a family of four — Grant, Amie, Bodhi Honey, and River Ace — and it has become one of our most-loved sites on the entire network. Here is our honest, detailed review.
Getting There
We will be upfront: our journey took seven hours. It was meant to take four and a half. When you are travelling with a neurodivergent family, you build in flexibility, and on this occasion we needed every bit of it — two essential stops, a bit of motorway traffic, and the general unpredictability of travelling with young children. But the moment we pulled into Hillhead and the kids took their first breath of Devon air, every extra mile melted away. That is the thing about having the caravan — wherever you end up, you are home.
Arrival and Pitches
Hillhead offers a choice of hardstanding or grass electric pitches, all with white pegs. We drove a few loops around the site to find the right spot — we always prioritise being near the play park, and we found a brilliant hardstanding electric pitch close to it. If you are travelling with children, proximity to the park is worth the extra few minutes of scouting.
Grant set up while the children and I explored the site — this is our standard routine, and the Thule Omnistor and Isabella Buddy sides make the whole process significantly faster. By the time we had done a full lap of the site, checked out the facilities, found the information room, and located the pool, he was all set up and ready for us.
The Facilities
The shower block at Hillhead is spotless and well-maintained. For families with neurodivergent children, knowing that the washrooms are clean and easy to navigate genuinely reduces the anxiety around a new site. The facilities here are spacious, clearly laid out, and consistently well-kept throughout our stay. There are dedicated accessible facilities and a separate accessible shower room.
The information room is excellent — packed with leaflets and local guides for days out across Devon. We always make the information room one of our first stops at a new site, and Hillhead’s is one of the best we have found on the network. It made planning our days out significantly easier.
The Pool
The heated outdoor pool is one of Hillhead’s standout features, and it is brilliant. Open from 10am to 6pm with a lifeguard on duty throughout (children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult), it is warm, well-maintained, and not overcrowded. We went on our first afternoon, straight after exploring the site, and the children were in within minutes. For a family that has just spent seven hours in a car, a warm outdoor pool is exactly what everyone needs.
The Play Park
The play park at Hillhead is genuinely excellent — great for all ages, with a variety of equipment and, crucially, enough space that it never feels cramped. You can even catch glimpses of the sea from the park, which gives it a quality that most inland sites simply cannot match. For our children, having a park this good within walking distance of the pitch is essential. Bodhi and River spent hours there across our stay, burning off energy, making friends, and coming back to the van happy and tired in the best possible way.
For neurodivergent families specifically, the open space around the park is as important as the equipment itself. There is room to run, room to decompress, and room to step back from the activity without feeling like you are in anyone’s way. That kind of space is genuinely valuable.
Kids’ Entertainment
On our first evening, we dressed the children up and headed to kids’ entertainment with Anna Banana. Both children had a brilliant time, made some new friends, and came back to the van buzzing. This is one of the things we love most about Club Campsites — there is always something going on in the evenings that gives the children a social experience without requiring us to travel anywhere.
The Site as a Base for Devon
Hillhead’s location makes it an excellent base for exploring south Devon. The information room had leaflets for everything from local beaches to Dartmoor, and the site is well-positioned for days out across the region. We used it as a base for several
days out during our stay — see our Cornwall & Devon days out guide for our full recommendations.
Why Hillhead Works for Neurodivergent Families
As an Autism and ADHD family advocate, I want to be specific about why Hillhead works for families like ours, rather than just saying it is “family friendly.”
The spacious pitches provide the personal space that helps prevent sensory overwhelm — there is room between you and your neighbours, which matters enormously when your children need to decompress outside the van without feeling like they are on top of other people. The well-maintained, clearly laid-out facilities reduce the anxiety of the unknown. The play park provides the physical movement and gross motor input that both our children need to regulate. And the overall atmosphere of the site — welcoming, unhurried, and genuinely inclusive — means we feel comfortable letting the children be themselves.
We always feel welcomed at Club Campsites, and Hillhead is no exception. It is a site where our family can genuinely relax.
2025 Pricing Offer
A brilliant tip for families planning ahead: kids aged 5–17 stay for just £1, and under 5s stay FREE at Club Campsites in 2025. This makes an already excellent value holiday even more accessible for families of all sizes.
