Why France?
France is the natural first destination for UK caravanners heading abroad. The roads are good, the sites are excellent, the food is extraordinary, and the French have a genuine appreciation for caravanning as a way of travelling.
The Club’s Red Pennant Overseas Travel Service gave us the confidence to go — knowing we had emergency cover for the caravan, the car, and the family made the trip feel much less daunting.
The Ferry
We took the Eurotunnel from Folkestone to Calais. It is faster than the ferry, more predictable, and significantly less stressful with children and a dog.
Book the Eurotunnel as far in advance as possible — prices rise significantly as the date approaches, and the early morning crossings sell out quickly in summer.

Driving in France with a Caravan
French autoroutes are excellent for towing — wide lanes, good surfaces, and regular service areas. The tolls add up over a long trip but the quality of the roads makes them worthwhile.
Remember that speed limits for vehicles towing a trailer are lower than for cars alone. In France, the limit on autoroutes is 130km/h for cars but 110km/h when towing.
