Mistake 1: Not Checking the Payload

Payload is the difference between the caravan’s Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass (MTPLM) and its Mass in Running Order (MiRO). It is the weight you are allowed to add — bedding, food, clothes, accessories, everything.

Many caravans have surprisingly small payloads. A caravan with a 200kg payload sounds like plenty until you start adding up the weight of everything you actually take on a trip.

Always check the payload before you buy and be realistic about how much you carry.

Mistake 2: Ignoring the Nose Weight

Nose weight is the downward force the caravan exerts on the towball. Too little and the caravan becomes unstable. Too much and it strains your tow vehicle.

Every tow vehicle has a maximum nose weight rating. Check it and make sure your caravan’s nose weight when loaded falls within that limit.

Mistake 3: Not Getting a PDI

A Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) is a thorough check of the caravan before you take delivery. Always insist on a full PDI and make sure everything is working before you drive away.

[PERSONALISE: Add any specific issues you found during your PDI or on your first trip]

Mistake 4: Buying Too Small

Many first-time buyers go smaller than they need to save money or because they are nervous about towing a larger van. We nearly made this mistake.

A caravan that is too small for your family will make you miserable. The extra cost of a larger van is worth it for the comfort and space, especially on longer trips.
